The internet and newspapers are full of transfer rumours at the minute, which is normal at the end of the season. Arsenal are always linked with a multitude of possible transfer targets and there are usually lots of rumours about who will leave the club as well.

This summer promises to be a little different for Arsenal fans. For once, we can look at the transfer window without a cold feeling of dread, but instead can look forward to some signings that will give us hope for next season. The Real Madrid and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain is certainly of that calibre and it is beginning to llok like he really could be at the Emirates next season.

The final day drama at Newcastle means that Arsenal are in the Champions League next season. This means that Arsene Wenger will not have a reduced transfer war chest and the top players we want will have the lure of that elite competition. Wenger can now go after the players he wants and the club is preparing a bid of £19 million for Higuain, according to The Telegraph.

Juventus are the club most likely to scupper the deal, but they are also after another Arsenal target Stevan Jovetic. The paper reports that Jovetic may prefer to stay in Italy. If they get Jovetic and we get Higuain, I would be more than happy. The 25-year old may not have had a brilliant season at Madrid, but 15 La Liga goals from 28 games is not bad. He has been at the Bernabeu for seven seasons and has not flourished under the abrasive style of Jose Mourinho.

The Spanish giants are still under the shadow of Barcelona so are planning big changes, which has made Higuain available. I hope that Wenger is on a plane to Spain as we speak.

  1. I think that both players could on their way. Higuain is an out and out striker who could be on his way to replace bendtner chamakh and park. If we should sell all 3 then half of higuains fee could be covered plus those 3 salaries saved should easily cover higuains wages with some left over. Similarly if arsenal sell gervinho and santos and release arshavin again we could raise at least half of the fee for jovetic and have enough in saved wages to more than cover jovetic’s salary. Ok I know santos is a left back but he has already been replaced positionally by monreal. It appears that cazorla has now been transitioned by wenger into a 3 man attack so in cazorla walcott podolski jovetic higuain giroud we would have 6 outstanding attackers fighting for 3 positions. In midfield arteta ramsey wilshire and chamberlain look nailed. However in coquelin frimpong rosicky denilson and diaby we have 5 players that for one reason or another could find themselves out of the squad next season. We could well see arsenal sell or release all 5 and go for two new midfielders I think gonalons and fabregas could be the suprise. In defence we are sorted at left back and would also be sorted at right back if sagna stays or is replaced if he goes. I expect squillaci and djourou to move on with us bringing in another right sided centre-back I think koyate could be the choice here. Finally I expect fabianski and mannone to move on with either schwarzer or cesar coming in.

  2. Jovetiv or higuan I will gladly accept any of the two….. But I’ll prefer higuan bcos I knw him very well… I havnt seen jovetic play but I heard he is pretty good.

  3. I suggest that we can get both. This is how it can work. Jovetic is a utility player. He can replace aging Rosicky in the centre. That could be the reason why Wenger moved Carzola to the wing to test the formation. Personally this would be my dream side. Formation, 4,2,2,1,1. Team: Schezny, Right back, Christian Maggio from Napoli, Centre backs Martesacker, Kosienly assited by Vermalean.Laft back the rivary between Monreal and Gibss should see us get the best out of either. Defensive Mid Wanyama from Celtic, and Ramsey/Arteta in deep attacking role. Carzola, and Walcott make up the midfield, Jovetic plays the hole role and Higuain leads the attack. That to me creates a high scoring low conceding side. Ox, Gervinho, Podolski and Giroud make up the Bench for now. Wilshere? He gets space as he keeps injuries at bay…

  4. I’ll be very surprised if we sign him. He’s only able to play as a CF which means dur to us playing 4-5-1 either him or Giroud will be spending most of the season warming up the bench unless an injury happens. I can’t see either player being happy with this so I’d be surprised if he signs.

In my opinion the only strikers we can sign are either young understudies that are happy to bide their time for a season or two or players that are capable of playing more than one position. Jovetic fits the bill nicely but I’m concerned about how well he’ll adapt to a faster more physical league.
