It might still be a subject for debate among the Arsenal fans but I think that most of us agree with Thierry Henry about the club needing more options than the French international Olivier Giroud to score our goals.

We do have the excellent Alexis Sanchez of course and our midfielders chip in with goals but it remains to be seen whether Danny Welbeck can push on and challenge Giroud for that central striker position. And the former Man United man really needs to improve his goal tally to go along with his good all round game.

But we do already have a bit of a goal machine in the shape of Theo Walcott who banged in four goals in the final two games of the season and backed that up with the opener against Everton on Saturday. He was the club’s top scorer in his last full season as well so the fact that his contract is now in its final year was a real worry. Or it was until he declared in a Sky Sports report that he was happy at Arsenal and ready to sign a new deal.

He said, “My agent has talked to the club.

“I enjoy playing for this club, so I am just letting them crack on with things and I’ll continue playing football.

“We’ll just play the waiting game and see what happens but I’m sure it won’t be long. This squad, for me, is one of the best I’ve been involved in. I want to be part of that.

“You don’t want to dwell on it, you want to play well and, if it happens, it happens.

“I won’t let that delay the way I’m going to be playing this season. I can’t let that affect me, I want to do well for this club.

“It’s my first pre-season for two years now, so I want to work hard and get fit.

“It’s a really exciting year for myself personally and I think this team can go very far.”

So that is one key player close to signing. Who’s next?
