Knowing the way that Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board do their transfer business, the news today reported by the Daily Express is almost as good as Borussia Dortmund saying that Mats Hummels is not for sale.

Because the paper claims that the Dortmund and Germany centre back will cost any club wanting to sign him in the January transfer window, a staggering and eye watering transfer fee of £48 million. That would not make Hummels the most expensive defender transfer in football history, with PSG having paid Chelsea a ridiculous £50 million for David Luiz, but it would break the Gunners transfer record.

And while Wenger may be willing to pay over £40 million for a creative player like Mesut Ozil, I cannot seeing the Prof paying anything like that for a defender, especially after the latest Arsenal transfer rumours suggested that he would only have £20m to spend in January.

So Arsenal had better send the scouting team out on their travels again, but who would you like to see Arsenal bring in to bolster the defence?
