As the Arsenal and England striker was scoring the two international goals that gave the Man United and England captain a win over Slovenia to celebrate on the occasion of his 100th cap, Wayne Rooney’s club fans may well have been wondering once more why Louis van Gaal allowed Arsenal and Arsene Wenger to snap up the England star for a bargain price during the summer transfer window.

And it seems that the Dutchman is determined not to let the same thing happen again in the January transfer window, according to a report in the Daily Star. Van Gaal has apparently decided that there is no way he will let the Gunners complete their expected transfer bid for the United and England defender Chris Smalling.

It is still expected that Man United will attempt to sign at least one big name defender when the winter window opens. But the report claims that all their injury problems have caused the under pressure manager to let no other defenders leave Old Trafford until the end of the season.

If this is true, then I hope that Wenger has other options on his transfer list. Mats Hummels maybe?
