Whilst we await to see who our next signing will be, Arsenal may as well think about what Granit Xhaka will bring to the side this season and Per Mertesacker has been full of praises about his new teammate.

Speaking with Arsenal.com Per Mertesacker, who is anticipated as the club’s next captain, was keen to express his excitement about linking up with Gunner’s new boy Granit Xhaka. Following on from the Swiss international’s £30 million move, Arsenal fans eagerly anticipate to see the club’s new signing in action after an impressive Euro’s with his national side Switzerland.

Mertesacker told Arsenal.com: ‘He’s a leader and that is really important, especially in midfield. He has got a very good attitude, is very composed on the ball and contributes a lot. He is a good passer as well, so he will set the tempo. I am looking forward to how he does it, how composed he will be in training and in the games. He will be the perfect signing for us.’

Mertesacker certainly knows what Xhaka’s all about and I’m sure that the 23 year old will be a key man for Arsenal next season if he can make an instant impact with the Gunners in the Premier League. Adapting to a new league isn’t always easy and occasionally it has been seen for even top players to struggle in England at first. With this in mind I don’t expect Xhaka to be a consistent regular performer in the opening months of the season, however I do expect the Swiss international to ultimately hold down a regular first team spot over the course of the entire campaign.

Mertesacker says that Xhaka has a ‘good attitude’, which I hope he isn’t talking about his fierce tackles on the pitch. It’s good to see aggression and fight in the midfield areas because that’s where the stronger and more dominant team really shows in a game. However Xhaka is known for the odd nasty challenge here and there, so he may have to work on his disciplinary record and attitude towards showing his fight at Arsenal, otherwise he may find himself suspended once or twice next season and Xhaka can’t make an impact if he isn’t playing!
