Arsenal have been given a boost in our hopes of completing the transfer of the Germany international defender Mats Hummels, with reports from Spain suggesting that his club Borussia Dortmund will sell him for the right price. And while that price will be a large one, it looks like the Gunners will need to make their move this January or risk missing out altogether.

Because the Daily Star have reported that Hummels is also one of the priority transfer targets for our Premier League rivals Manchester United. But the good news is that United will not try to sign the 25-year old German until next summer.

United have just released some disappointing financial figures and their executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has reacted by suggesting that no transfer business will be done by them in the January window, at least not any big deals like the Hummels one.

But they could come back strongly into the transfer market in the summer and even with their debt compared to the good financial position of Arsenal, United will probably be able to outbid us, so it could be January or bust for our hopes of making Hummels a Gunner…
