It has been a painful 10 years or so for Arsenal fans. After the Gunners really hit the heights by winning the Premier League without a single defeat in 2004 and lifting the FA cup in 2005, we had to wait nine long years for another trophy. Even though we reached a few finals, including the big one of the Champions League in 2006, Arsenal fans expected more.

And the same has been true of the league, despite being in a great position a few times like last season and in 2008 when Eduardo’s leg break saw us falter at the final hurdle. And the team that has made the most of our struggles, in more ways than one, is Chelsea.

They have had the money to spend that Wenger was starved of and they used it to win a lot of silverware while beating the Gunners to various transfer targets. Even worse, they poached some of our players off us, with Ashley Cole’s smug grin and baiting of his former club the worst example.

So hopefully the Arsenal transfer rumour reported by Metro about our interest in taking the former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg comes true. The Belgian international is a real talent and has come good again since leaving Stamford Bridge and it would be great to see him starring under Wenger when Mourinho could not get him to perform. We can only hope…

  1. It’s not been a “painful ten years” for me. Over the course of those ten years Arsenal have played some good football and had some good teams. Yes, trophies too would have been good, but that’s the icing on the cake rather than the be-all and end-all
