While the Arsenal fans are understandably feeling a bit impatient and are keen for Arsene Wenger to get some good signings made in the January transfer window, I am sure that the manager and his back room staff are working hard to get the right players into the club.

Wenger has said before that he would not make transfers in the January window just for the sake of it, so he clearly does not like a stop gap solution, even if the Gunners are looking seriously stretched in a few key areas. One of those, clearly, is in defence, especially now that Mathieu Debuchy has dislocated his shoulder and looks set to miss the next three months of the season.

It is not just finding the right player though, as there is the small matter of availability and that has perhaps made Wenger’s mind up that the Celtic centre back Virgil van Dijk is the right signing for Arsenal right now. The young Dutch defender, as reported by the Daily Mail, that he was ready to move to the Premier League and he specifically mentioned Arsenal as well.

van Dijk said, “I have recently been thinking a bit about it [his career].

“I am now 23 and have played at Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic and am now linked to clubs like Arsenal. Isn’t that great?

“There are a lot of clubs interested, but Celtic is holding on to a big transfer fee. The club is clear: they don’t want to let me go in the winter, because we’re playing for four trophies.

“I understand the point of view from the club and I see it as a compliment that they don’t want to let me go. But we have to be realistic.”

Van Dijk would certainly fir with the Wenger and Arsenal policy of planning for the future as he has plenty to learn, despite already being a powerful and accomplished centre back. So is Wenger about to pick up the phone and call Celtic?
