Apart from clearing out his locker, sticking a SOLD sign on it and handing one of the other Arsenal players the number five shirt, Arsene Wenger could hardly make it more clear that the club captain, Thomas Vermaelen, will not be playing for Arsenal in the season ahead.

The fact that the Belgium international has not been seen at training or anywhere around the club, despite hyaving been due back from his summer holiday some time ago, has been a big hint, but Wenger confirmed the suspicions today, as reported by Arsenal.com, while talking to the media in the build up to Arsenal v Man City for the Community Shield on Sunday.

And the Prof also admitted that there was more than one club after the versatile defender, with both Man United and Barcelona having been linked in recent Arsenal transfer rumours. He also admitted that there were offers in place from Vermaelen when asked.

Wenger said, “Yes… I can’t tell you [who they are from], but you will know very soon.

“I’ve said since the start of pre-season that Thomas could leave us because he needs to play now. He had an outstanding attitude and behaviour but he’s in a position where it’s difficult to stand in his way if he finds an interesting opportunity.

“Ideally yes [I would rather sell Vermaelen abroad]. It is an option. I don’t want to tell you [which clubs are interested] but we have offers from abroad as well.”

At least there is some good news for Arsenal fans about the offers from abroad, because we don’t want to see another former captain playing against us in the Premier League, with van Persie at United and Cesc Fabregas now at Chelsea.

So let’s hope that the verminator is off to play in La Liga for Barcelona, although I would not be surprised if the Gunners then drew them in the Champions League…

  1. Amazed no one has mentioned maybe swapping vermanlen for song if barc are actually interested …. Song would solve the DM ( him and flamini) and can play CH effectively replacing vermanlen who was mainly back up … Could save selling 30m for DM … I know there were question marks over song attitude but I would like to think he has a point to prove ???

  2. Vermaelen was at members day today. His no.5 shirt hasn’t been given away, chambers simply wore a training short with that number on. The same thing has happened to loads of other numbers this summer. Even in the friendlies some of the other numbers have been worn.
