Whether Arsene Wenger has been forced to make use of the free transfer system because of the mounting Arsenal injury list, or whether the Frenchman had this idea in mind all the time, I neither know nor care. I just hope that the reports are true.

According to various Arsenal transfer rumours, including the Metro, the defensive crisis at the club has persuaded Wenger that he needs another central defender and there are a few available for free because they are currently without a club.

Names like Joseph Yobo and Diego Lugano are being mentioned and while they do not exactly set pulses racing, they are experienced and are much better than nothing. We already have Calum Chambers as cover, of course, but this week’s game against Borussia Dortmund showed that any problems with him or any more of the defenders would leave us laid bare.

The other free transfer that the Frenchman is planning to make is for that pesky defensive midfield position, according to the Daily Express, and the player in question is the former Real Madrid and Chelsea star Lassana Diarra, who already spent a season under Wenger at Arsenal in 2007/2008.

He is not your typical Arsenal player, as he is a hard hitting and properly defensive minded midfielder. But he can also play right back and would add the steel that was sorely missing from the Gunners in Germany.
