When it was clear that Arsenal were not going to beat our Premier League rivals Man United to the transfer of Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton, despite a mountain of Arsenal transfer rumours over the last two years linking us with the Frenchman and recent reports suggesting that the player himself would have preferred to join the Gunners than the Red Devils, it did not necessarily mean the end of our hopes that Arsene Wenger would sign a top quality central midfielder this summer.

In fact, even with the brilliant second half of the season put in by Francis Coquelin and the new contract handed to the Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta, there was a growing theory that the boss had turned his transfer sights on the talented young Portugal international William Carvalho.

But now, as reported by Metro, it really does look like Arsenal will have to make do with what we have, as Carvalho has picked up an injury that will keep him out of action for about three months and the chances of Wenger forking out around £25 million for him now are slimmer than a cigarette paper.
