Bellerin contract shows Arsenal Youth Policy still works….

Hector Bellerin may or may not be a player you’ve ever heard of and you may not of been aware he was amongst the Arsenal ranks, but the Spanish under 19 international has been a very effective player for Arsenal under 21 and reserves over the past two seasons and his performances last season especially have been recognised through the offer of a new contract.

The contract is only being reported as a long term deal and no wages are of course involved in the news however this is a promising move by Arsenal. You may not see any relevance in reading this news however there is something more substantial to this agreement than you may think.

Arsenal secured the Spanish youngster along with fellow Spaniard Jon Toral, both from European dominators FC Barcelona. Arsenal and Barcelona seem to be one of the most transferable teams in recent history with both clubs seeming being involved in at least one transfer at season. Unfortunately its usually players leaving the Gunners for the Liga BBVA Champions and in the past 10 years or so we’ve seen the likes of Slyvinho, Overmars, Hleb, King Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song all switch England for Spain. But Arsenal also get their fair share of Barca players, it’s just our signings from the Catalan club never seem to be over the age of 20.

We have signed the likes of Fran Merida, Cesc Fabregas, Ignasi Miquel, Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral. Some have made it on the big scale, some haven’t but the fact remains that Wenger seems to be pretty good in spotting a young talent from Barcelona when he sees one and I think we’ve got a very good and promising player in Bellerin.

Although not featuring for Arsenal in the first team he seems to be on the brink of being a first team squad player and after a very successful time at Arsenal making 52 appearances and scoring 5 goals from the Right Back position, Bellerin certainly looks set to be a promising player who in my opinion could challenge Carl Jenkinson for the number one right back spot in a few years time.

  1. Nice post but you forgot Petit in the list that had moved from Arsenal to Barca and the only player to make it big on the scale is Cesc, the rest have failed to make any impact.

Still, it looks like Bellerin is one to watch.

  2. Together with Thomas Eisfield , Kristoffer Olsson, Chuks Aneke,to name but a few,I think we have a very promising future together with the current 1st team squad.
