Arsenal fans have had to suffer the pain of seeing another former captain starring for a Premier League rival, with Cesc Fabregas threatening to do for Chelsea what Robin van Persie did for Man United and help them to win the title.

But there could be some revenge for the Gunners, especially if the German defender Antonio Rudiger turns out to be as good a player as his first few years in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart have suggested. The 21-year old has been so good that a host of top clubs around Europe have been alerted, with Man United and Chelsea among them.

And according to a Metro report, Jose Mourinho has made the centre back one of his top transfer targets. And with his Bundesliga club admitting that they will struggle to hold on to Rudiger if a big club comes in for him, Chelsea would have been hoping that their bid of £7 million would be successful.

Except that the young defender has destroyed that idea by claiming that he is an Arsenal fan through and through, basically issuing a come and get me plea to Arsene Wenger.

Rudiger said, “I have always dreamed of the Premier League.

“I have been following Arsenal since the days of Henry and Bergkamp. I watch videos of Arsenal all the time on YouTube and I often wear the current Alexis Sanchez shirt.

“My heart beats for Arsenal.”

With Arsenal desperately in need of more defensive cover, it looks like Wenger’s wishes have just been granted, with the added bonus of denying Mourinho and Chelsea to sweeten the deal.
