In a subject that has received little recognition apart from the occasional article; I think Fabianski has proved on a number of occasions this season exactly why Arsenal have made a mistake by not getting the Polish international to commit his future with the club.

Fabianski is out of contract this summer and he has already announced that the club has not convinced him to stay and that he will instead move on for greater opportunities. The move which will end his seven year association with the club will see what I think a great back up option move away from the Emirates on the back of a poor decision. Fabianski outlined success, playing time and a new desire as the reasons for his decision for a different footballing opportunity and although I am disappointed that he will be leaving, in the same instance I cannot uphold his decision as being the wrong one.

Fabianski has shown on several occasions this season alone that he has a lot of quality, especially for a keeper considered to be nothing more than a backup option. He also showed his quality last term with a fantastic display against Bayern Munich, keeping a clean sheet in Germany. His latest string of success in between the sticks came against Liverpool on Sunday, in which despite conceding to a penalty, he saved everything else that posed a threat, including several powerful drives and a one on one effort with the striker.

Fabianski is a good goalkeeper who has overcome his previous difficulties regarding his quality between the sticks and has proven to be one of, if not, the best back up goalkeepers in the Premier League. His reactions and reflexes are simply outstanding and although positioning and handling may still be a little shaky, it’s something he has continued to work on. It has been a good few years since I heard the reference ‘Flappyhanski’ used and it’s because he has drastically improved as a player.

Despite all this, he shouldn’t be in line to replace his national counterpart Szczesny, because he is doing even better with the Gunners and so that’s why I can understand he wants to leave, however if Arsenal can find a better second choice keeper than Fabianski, who has been content to serve in that position for numerous years and continue to work himself without asking for a massive pay check, then I will be very surprised.

  1. Fabianski was never going to commit to another contract without assurances which Wenger knows he cannot give. Scz is no doubt our number one and anything else Arsenal told Fabianski would be a bold faced lie so he was always going to leave because he’s improved massively and he can be a starter for a club elsewhere. Chances are he’ll end up in the Bundesliga, likely Gladbach because I’m sure Ter Stegen is leaving or Schalke because Hildebrand is past it.
