It was not very long ago at all that Arsenal fans could really stick it to our Premier League rivals on the red side of Liverpool. It was funny to hear the fans and former players from Anfield moaning about why the brilliant Chile international Alexis Sanchez snubbed them and decided he wanted to join Arsenal from La Liga giants Barcelona.

But now the shoe could be on the other foot, according to a Sky Sports report. Because Liverpool are apparently on the verge of completing a season long loan deal for Javi Manquillo, the 20-year old right back from the Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. It had previously been reported in various Arsenal transfer rumours that Arsene Wenger was keen on bringing the promising young Spaniard to the Emirates, so how have the Gunners lost out on this transfer?

Maybe Manquillo just preferred a move to Liverpool, but I think there are two scenarios that are more likely. Firstly, the Arsenal boss said the other day that he expects Carl Jenkinson to step up another level this season and challenge our new France international Mathieu Debuchy for a starting place, which suggests to me that Wenger may have gone off the Manquillo loan deal.

Another possibility is that Manquillo decided that his chances of playing would be better at Liverpool, and given the woeful performances of their England international Glen Johnson at the World Cup finals in Brazil, it would be hard to disagree with him. Why do you think Manquillo is going to Liverpool instead of Arsenal?
