Just on the back of reports that Arsenal have activated Everton and Belgium midfielder, Maroune Fellaini’s buyout clause of £22 million, today several media outlets state that Arsenal are coming ever closer to agreeing a deal with Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain is one of the many players we have been linked with over the summer so far, but he is also one player that has been consistently perused by Wenger and now the links are persistently surrounding the club. Like the Jovetic saga, Higuain is, or was at one point, wanted by Serie A side Juventus and some stated that personal terms had been agreed, but a fee for the Argentinean could not.

Since then Higuain has gone on to make comments about Arsenal and some reports even state the information that Higuain actually said he has accepted Arsenal’s proposition but there is still on-going talks. This may have looked unlikely at the time however after his comments, which were;
“There have already been offers and I hope that Madrid do the best for me and themselves,. Arsenal? They would suit me, I’m still young and I have goals. There are many possibilities. I want to go to a league where I’ll be put to the test.”

Although he does only mention Arsenal, he also states that there are other clubs interested but the main focus here is the fact that these latest rumours are about personal terms being agreed with the striker and that Arsenal will now try to finalise the transfer with Real Madrid. These could be more accurate than we think.

We all know that the club has the money this summer and there is some form of certainty that Arsene Wenger will look to spend his budget, so for a reported £20 million asking price, it’s certainly a reasonable fee for someone of Higuain’s quality.

Higuain now seems to be the striker that most Arsenal fans now realistically want, with Jovetic and Rooney dividing fans opinion. The signing of Higuain would show certain intention to compete this year and I think based upon who is realistic as well as the players that are perhaps available, Higuain seems to be the best candidate.

  1. For me it has to be higuain or rooney and I would edge towards rooney simply because of epl experience and the “extra revenue” that signing a player of his enigma would attract. Similarly the re-signing of cesc if he is available has to be done regardless of whether or not a player of his type is a priority. The fact is we can improve on our priority positions quite cheaply. Cesar or even schwarzer would be an improvement on fabianski and mannone. Rangel would be an improvement on jenkinson who in my mind needs a loan spell. Williams or taylor would be an improvement on djourou. Whilst capoue and fellaini would be an improvement on coquelin and the injured diaby. I wouldn’t sell coquelin but perhaps using him to attract fellaini by sending him on loan to everton even offer them frimpong as well to give them options.

  2. Did you know that Higuain was born in France ? My favorite of all French towns in fact, Brest. It may help if he is in face-to-face negotiations with Arsene that they can talk French and Arsene undoubtedly has an advantage with any player with French roots. I know he plays for Argentina but he has mixed heritage.

  3. It’s not certain that Arsenal are going to spend this year, all we’ve got so far are promises, like all the other years.

    Also, I think the only reason Higuain mentioned Arsenal is because he was specifically asked about Arsenal as a possible club. There is some doubt about where that quote comes from and if it’s actually true. I’m not celebrating until it’s official.

  4. Perez won`t let Arsenal speak to Higuain`s Father & agent before Mourinho`s successor is in place, but have allowed Juve in. Says it all. The deal is dead.
