As we already know, Arsenal’s squad is desperately thin on the ground at the moment and if I am correct I believe I once wrote that after letting go of a staggering 27 players this summer and bringing in just one player in return it has left us with little more than 24 professional footballers signed to a contract at the club.

Those sort of numbers are ridiculously low, especially if you consider what this club’s aim apparently is. No way can we win, let alone be contenders with that type of squad. Not to mention the quality of players those 24 make up. Consistency is going to be a real issue this season and the situation could be worsened by the fact that we have already started to pick up injuries across the squad before the opening game of the season.

As we prepare to face Aston Villa this Saturday in the opening weekend on the Premier League season, many would say that we should be strong enough to beat them and if I’m honest, most aren’t expecting anything less than 3 points from this game. However injuries have begun to take their toll and we are already without several players for this opener.

With doubts over the fitness of England duo Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott now rubbished, unfortunately the same doesn’t go for the other players. Aaron Ramsey, Bacary Sagna and Spanish duo Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla are all battling fitness issue which may rule them out of the opening game.

Club Captain Thomas Vermaelen has a long term injury and so there’s no chance of a return for him, whilst Arteta has joined him, with reports saying the vice-captain could be out for as long as a month.

Cazorla, Sagna and Ramsey are all battling to be fit, and it’s vital they pull through with full fitness because at the moment they are some of the players in the highest form at the moment at Arsenal. It would be bitterly disappointing to see any major changes to the line-up but if I’m honest this should have never occurred in the first place. We should have strengthened enough to cope with these desperate situations however I suppose the real concerns right now are, fielding a couple of reserve players and then just being ready to see the demolition of Arsenal FC just like we saw a few years back.

  1. Its a complete joke. AW should have kept players until replacements were found and his gamble has not paid off. That combined with not signing players has led to a squad that will struggle over the course of the season in terms of consistency at a stage where we should have built on the limited success of acheiving 4th spot last season. I hope aw has the answers and he is the only person who knows what direction the club is going. There is still time to sign players and now arteta is injured maybe they will gable on flamini on a short term deal as he knows the club and will be free. Its a ridiculas situation to be in and Wenger must take full responsiblity for this.

  2. very negative post. Its you type of supporters that make it harder for these guys to perform with confidence. We all already know the media love nothing but a arsenal witch hunt. Just fuelling the fire lads..keep the faith
