Arsenal have been linked to a plethora of goalkeepers recently- from Hamburg’s Rene Adler, Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic and even Barcelona’s Victor Valdes after it was confirmed that he will not be renewing his contract with the Catalans at the end of the season. Others include Brazil’s Julio Cesar and Lazio keeper Fedrico Marchetti.

Recently several newspapers have added yet another name to the fray, reporting that Arsenal are interested in Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas.

One of the most decorated keepers in the world, the 31 year old has been going through a rough patch at Real Madrid. He hasn’t played for them since January after reportedly losing favor with Real Madrid manager Jose Mouinho. Recently he has recovered from an injury and has been trying to win back his place in the squad.

Casillas has been with Real Madrid for a whopping 23 years, spending over half of that time at the top level and teams interested may have to dig deep with the Spaniard expected to have a price tag of around £30 million.

If Arsenal were to pick up the World Cup winning stopper, two things would probably have to go our way. Champion’s League football next season would be the big one, and secondly Casillas will be much more likely to leave the Bernabau if Jose Mourinho stays on as manager for another season. If Jose stays, it would limit the chances of Casillas getting a good run next season and if Arsenal can make top 4 and get those Champions League fixtures we might be able to reel him in from Madrid.

If Jose Mourinho, who is linked to Chelsea, does in fact leave Madrid, Casillas will probably stay. Last month he was quoted as saying “I will fight for my place (as first choice keeper for Madrid)” after being replaced by Diego Lopez who transfered to Madrid in the summer from Sevilla.

In the past 4 years Iker Casillas has won an abundance of trophies, from the World Cup 2010 with Spain, to the Euro cups of 2008 and 2012, to the La Liga Championship and Spanish Cup.

He is the only player to have won the IFFHS Best Goalkeeper award 5 times in a row.

So who do you think would be a great fit if Arsenal do pick up a new keeper? I think Casillas would be a very nice addition however 30 million for a 31 year old player is a pretty big price – we’re talking more money than van Persie now, so I think if Arsenal were to get him the deal might have to include Sagna whose contract is done with Arsenal at the end of next season.

  1. Never going to happen. Ridicules rumor 30 mil for a stopper… Yeah right, He’s a fantastic keeper but Arsene will never pay that sum. When there are good keepers available for 5-10 mil.

  2. Would it be great if Arsenal bought arguably the best keeper in the world ? I think it goes without saying that any fan would like to see that.
