The Arsenal and France defender Laurent Koscielny has been the subject of interest from Bayern Munich for months, ever since Pep Guardiola was announced as the new Bayern manager. The thought of losing Koscielny angered some Arsenal fans because he is regarded as one of the club’s best players after the season he has had. Guardiola’s former club Barcelona are also chasing him as a long term replacement for Carles Puyol.

Good news to those who love him, he will be staying at Arsenal for the foreseeable future.

He has played well for the majority of this season but his Arsenal career did not get off to the best start. After his transfer from Lorient in 2010 he was criticised for his poor defending nearly every game he played for the club. He was definitely finding it difficult to adjust to the Premier League and struggled to form a good partnership with any of Arsenal’s other centre backs.

He had a streak of games where he scored own goals and got sent off – which was not a good thing for a defender to do. His highest profile mistake came in the 2011 League Cup final against Birmingham City where there was a lack of communication between him and the goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny which led to a goal and Birmingham eventually shocked the world by winning the trophy and prolonging Arsenal’s trophy drought which continues to this day.

The mistake was so high profile because Arsenal were almost a certainty to win the trophy and somehow lost. Koscielny and the rest of the team may have been overconfident but since that day he worked hard to improve himself and is now one of the club’s top players.

Throughout this season he has earned praise for his constant good form and how he has finally adjusted to the Premier League. It would be a complete insult for him to leave as soon as he has settled in properly and become such an important player, so the reports in the papers are a welcome relief.

The media are now saying that both he and Bacary Sagna are going to stay at the club and reject the advances of both Bayern and Barcelona. So Arsenal fans can stop worrying for the time being and focus on who will be arriving at the club rather than leaving for once.

  1. that’s why we need an instant impact player…we can’t wait a player to grow up that cost us a trophy…
