So far this season Arsenal have been the high fliers of the league, alongside Liverpool, proving to surprise everyone as we still currently top the league in first place almost two months into this year’s campaign. It’s difficult to put a reason on Arsenal’s success so far this season because it is really only down to simply good form. We haven’t had any luck, bearing in mind all our games have been fair, and we certainly haven’t had any luck with injuries, so it’s honestly all down to the performance of the players.

Some of those key players include Aaron Ramsey who has been a goal scoring machine, alongside Frenchman Olivier Giroud, whilst record summer signing Mesut Ozil has also worked wonders for his new club. But one man who has also been a consistent performer so far this season is Per Mertesacker, as he continues to carry over that high performance level from last season.

Mertesacker has become a really important member of the Arsenal team, despite being labelled as a ‘donkey’ and ‘panic buy’ during the early stages of his career with the club. But as you are fully aware he has gone on to become Arsenal’s first choice centre back, displacing Thomas Vermaelen, taking over the captaincy role for a part of the season and being a commanding voice in and around the team both on and off the pitch. Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Mertesacker revealed all about why the Gunners have been on such high form so far this season.

The German international said: “We kept the squad [this summer] and now I think there’s more quality to come. We have a few injured players as well; we hope they are coming back soon. We have a few blocks [of players]. We have a French bloc, a Spanish bloc, a British bloc and a German bloc, so we are international-influenced and that is what Arsenal are all about. It’s about how we can stick together as good as possible, as much as possible this season. Arsenal want to play international football and, when every player fits into that game, we can be successful. His [Ozil’s] progress is quite [good] at the moment and I think he will show more and more during the season. You can expect a lot from him.”

Mertesacker is certainly right on all the aspects he picked up on and in fact it pleases me to see so many full international players in the Arsenal side now after many years of players who were either on the fringes of their international teams or rarely got picked at all. We really do have some top class players at the club now and I think if we can keep these performances up until Christmas at least then we can really see if we have a chance of bringing back glory this term.
