Szczesny:”As a kid I always dreamed about exceeding my Dad”

Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny declared that it would be a dream come true for him to surpass his father’s call-ups for the senior Polish national squad. Szczesny senior, Maciej Szczęsny got 7 appearances for the Polish national squad between 1991 and 1996, and now the junior is after his father’s record.

Arsenal’s goalkeeper got his first call-up to the national squad in 2009 for a series of friendly games against Romania and Canada, and he made his first appearance in the second game coming in as a second half substitute. Since then Wojciech managed to become Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper and he gathered 6 appearances for Poland’s national team.

He will probably be able to match his father’s record next month when Poland will play Italy in a friendly game, thus officially becoming the best goalkeeper in the Szczesny family.

“It will be a big success,” Wojciech told Arsenal.com.

“As a kid I always dreamed about achieving the same things as my Dad did but it doesn’t mean that my career stops then.

“Leo Beenhakker, a famous coach who used to be in charge of the national team, told me that when you stop believing you are good that’s when your career stops.

“Even though I will surpass my Dad I am going to keep working hard and get as many caps as I can for Poland.”

The Polish youngster made his breakthrough at Arsenal during the 2010-2011 season, when taking advantage of Fabianski’s and Mannone’s injuries and of Almunia’s lack of form he managed to become the first choice goalkeeper after he started the season as the 4th choice.

Arsene Wenger must really be happy with himself for giving the Polish international goalkeeper a chance to shine after the excellent performances he had in the start of this season, and Arsenal’s goal is secured as long as he will be able to have the same kind of performances throughout the season.
