Was Jack Wilshere England’s Missing Piece?

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has admitted the fact that Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere’s absence was vital for England – who saw themselves knocked out by an Italy which the manager didn’t see as favorites.

Jack has been out for the whole season, and it seems that the Gunner will be back in due time for the start of next season, but Redknapp seems to think that he was the missing key from England’s Euro squad.

‘It was almost complete dominance, and to be fair, I didn’t see that coming. I didn’t particularly rate this Italy side.’

‘Don’t blame Roy Hodgson though, he did the best he could at Euro 2012 with limited time. We were hard to beat and well organised, but hopefully now he can change the way England play and that goes right back to the youth teams,’

‘It’s over to Roy now. He has four years to stamp his style on the national team and set-up.

‘And maybe with Wilshere to the fore and a few of the old guard around him he can do it.’

Arsene Wenger’s key element is about to return to the pitch soon, and with new additions like Podolski and Giroud, the Gunners will certainly look amazing next season.

  1. Something tells me that contrary to expectations in some quarters, Jack will hit the ground running next season. Someone said recently that the loss of form that Happened to Ramsey after his injury absence could repeat itself with Jack. I personally think that the two are not of same personality. I see Jack as a bit more fearless and ruthless. I think that he will be able to get back to the form he was in before he got injured.

  2. Jack can only do so much but England in general have some very limited talent. They have absolutely no skill as a nation and hardly any imagination on the field. Jack is good but it’s an 11 vs. 11 game and if the 10 other guys around him are mediocre to average then they will bring him down.

England’s grassroots program needs to be ripped up and revised with emphasis on a more technical game, rather than a physical one.

  3. Jack would have made the team better but not good enough to win the competition. I think we would have been in the semi beating Germany if they played against us like they did Italy.

Then lose against Spain in the final.

When we see the back of Lampard, Terry, Gerrard, Rooney and the other proven failures taking away starting places from younger, hungrier players – we won’t win diddly.

I think Wilshere, Gibbs and Chamberlain show that there is hope for the future, especially woth so much other great talent emerging. We’ve even got a decent national keeper again.

Of the old guard, I would only keep Gerrard and Ashley Cole. The others can go and do one, I reached the end of my tether with them during the World Cup 2010. What English person can watch our National side in ANY game during that tournament without cringing, swearing, spluttering and wanting to kick the TV in. That lot, besides Cole and Gerrard are nothing in my eyes and they never will be again.
