Wenger: Arsenal don’t need a new striker – we have Sanogo!

Arsene Wenger may have spent a fortune bringing Mesut Ozil to Arsenal this summer, but it seemed that a backup striker to Olivier Giroud was the main target for the Frenchman, hence the 40 million (+1) on the table for Luis Suarez.

But it practically went un-noticed that Arsenal brought in the young Frenchman Yaya Sanogo for next to nothing! Now Wenger has revealed that Sanogo is more than capable of moving up to the first team, and compares him with another certain young Frenchman that Wenger got on the cheap some years ago.

Wenger said: “When I started to play Anelka, everybody said ‘why you start Anelka, why not buy a striker?’ We won a championship with him,”

“It’s just like that, if we feel they are ready then they play.

“There’s a potential there. This boy is world champion of the under-20s, if he was an English centre forward and was world champion of the under-20s, you would not ask me these questions.

“I believe, up front it’s not the experience that decides. At the back, it’s different. But up front it’s an instinctive job. Experience helps a little bit. But the belief, the confidence, is more important up front than the experience.

“Sanogo is very ambitious and believes in his quality. He is very passionate and naturally has a great desire.

“He is ready for a fight. He is a similar shape to Giroud but you feel there is a lot more to come out with him.

“In terms of quality, he has a lot to do. He did not look out of place in the two games he played.”

Sanogo has only impressed in two games so far, but obviously Wenger believes he has the skills to go all the way to the top. Does that mean Arsenal fans should forget about getting a big name striker in the summer?

  1. That quote from Wenger was a couple of weeks ago when Sanogo was in the team to boost him up.

There is no new quote and certainly nothing to suggest that we wont buy a striker in the summer if a world class one becomes available to us and fits in with our game
