Wenger still not convinced by Francis Coquelin

Arsene Wenger recalled Francis Coquelin from his loan move at Charlton to help with Arsenal’s unrelenting injury roblems, and he was thrown in at the deep end against West Ham at Upton Park this week.

Although the young Frenchman performed admirably it seems that Wenger is not yet convinced that Francis is really good enough to become a regular Arsenal squad member. Wenger said on Arsenal.com: “I believe he has the potential but he has played one game, so it is a bit early to judge that. He will make a career and hopefully he will make it here.

“I want to give him credit because he kept his work rate and focus in training at a very high level when he didn’t play. Then he went to Charlton and had a very good spell there as well.”

It seems clear that Wenger did not think that Coquelin could make the cut which is why he did not retain his services for this season (or the last) but surely with our ongoing injury problems he should give him a chance to redeem himself, perhaps with another outing against Southampton on Thursday.

It seems strange that Wenger will give players like Ramsey and Wilshire untold chances even when it was obvious that they were out of form, but he holds back from praising Coquelin when he hardly put a foot wrong against West Ham.

Give the lad a chance I say!!

  1. Agreed. Wenger has always played Coquelin out of position as a stop-gap. With regular playing time as DM he could be just what we need.
