Wenger – Vermaelen is like a frustrated centre-forward!

Thomas Vermaelen has been Arsenal’s match-winner twice in the last few weeks, and Arsene Wenger reckons that his partnership with Laurent Koscielny at the back is just as good when they go into attacking mode as they are in defence.

But it is certainly a great sound-bite for Wenger to call Vermaelen a ‘frustrated centre-forward’, but the fact is that the Belgian international does seem to popup in the opposing penalty area on a regular basis!

Both Koscielny and Vermaelen were both imperious as Arsenal held off Everton on Wednesday, and Wenger couldn’t help drooling about their partnership after the game: “They look solid and I think they have a good balance defensively and offensively,” Wenger said.

“They can both play with the ball as well and for us that is very important for the basis of our game. It starts at the back and they have the quality to do that as well.

“Defensively they are not the tallest but they have a fantastic leap and both of them have good pace. Vermaelen looks like a frustrated centre forward because he has the timing to get into the box as well.”

It is certainly good news for Arsenal that there are now other players that can end up scoring when Van Pesie is not quite up to his usual unstoppable standards (like now).

Long may it continue!

  1. If jan vertonghen is added,we get more balance in defence@6ft3 & more attacking threats from the back 4.
