Wenger’s first signing confirmed – But not by Arsenal!

Despite no official confirmation from Arsenal, apparently new signing Yaya Sanogo is already impressed with the club. Speaking to French media, Sanogo stated his delight in signing with the Gunners and told reporters of how the surprise move came about.

Sanogo said; “I told my agent the choice would be made between these two clubs. Lille’s coach Rudi Garcia called me all the time. I hesitated a lot. Gilles Grimandi [Arsenal scout] came to see me from time to time at Auxerre too. One day he called me for a meeting in a Paris hotel and Arsene Wenger was there. I was very impressed.”

There isn’t anything special about these quotes however I did wonder why Wenger was in Paris, whilst the season still wasn’t finished. Now there isn’t any official date stated when the meeting took place, however the signing of Sanogo was first rumoured while the season was still fully underway as Arsenal looked to fight with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. So why was Wenger prioritising an unknown youngster over what was looking like the tightest end to the season under his reign?

Sanogo continued; “Wenger told me I would get opportunities and reassured me about my injury. He told me he had followed me for years. That meeting was very important and today I am an Arsenal player. It will be an amazing adventure. I am just eager to start in one of the best leagues in the world. It is a dream that has come true.”

It seems as if Sanogo thinks he will be playing in the Premier League. I doubt he will stay at Arsenal this summer as I think it’s vital a player of his age and talent gets regular competitive playing time, perhaps on loan at another UK club, especially with the injures he has had in the past.

Surely there isn’t any room for him in Arsenal’s first team right now? And why hasnt the club made an announcement about him coming to the Emirates yet?

  1. The club hardly ever announces signings until the photographs are to be launched. Podolski was an exception to the general rule for arsenal. But let’s make no mistake 20 year old sanogo is more likely to be a younger replacement for the departed 22 year old sanchez watt. People need to understand how the academy and first team budgets differ. The academy will sign all players not going directly into the 25 man squad (ie classed as homegrown/non-homegrown) this seasons academy budget will have improved greatly as we are set to field an under 19 side in the inaugaural uefa youth champions league. Also 16 academy players were released and all those saved wages plus the development fees paid by their new clubs will boost the academy budget. Already burton has signed 9 or 10 scholars including the highly rated barcelona centre back and dan crowley and I expect a number of 19/20 year olds still to come in as the under 21 squad has been decimated by the departures of shea hajrovic monteiro angha meade bhimoutine wynter rees ebicilio henderson eastmond watt neita roberts charles-cook and fagan. You would also expect the likes of martinez yennarris boateng miquel frimpong aneke eisfeld campbell afobe ryo to either go on season long loans or at least head out on 3 month loan deals around november time once the new scholars have had time to settle in.

  2. No bc, Ryo, Eisfield, Yenaris and Fimpong are to be on reserve bench playing Carling Cup or whatever its called. Coming on for a 20 or so minutes when a a game is well and trully won gives them a chance to come on and sharpen ther weapons among the elite. That also makes the depth of the team stronger.
