Arsene Wenger has already revealed his distaste for the January transfer window, although he has previously made it clear that Arsenal need some good cover for Robin Van Persie, preferably a proven goalscorer.
Well this week has seen two extremely prolific and well-proven strikers both move to new clubs for under £10m, both of who could have given Arsenal fans a bit of breathing space from worrying about whether Robin Van Persie will be leaving the club next summer.
First of all Newcastle clinced a deal for Papiss Cisse, who has an amazing record in the Bundesliga. He scored 24 goals in just 34 games last season for minnows Freiburg, and 9 from 15 this season, can you imagine if he was playing for Bayern Munich! The Toon signed him up on a 5.5 year contract for just £7.5m. That is a steal!
Next we have Gervinho’s ex-team mate Moussa Sow, who has reportedly just agreed terms with Fenerbahce and is set to sign for the Turkish giants for just £8m plus another couple in add-ons. Sows record is nearly as good as Cisse’s albeit in the French Ligue 1. Sow scored 25 goals for Lille last season as they won the French Championship and had a brilliant partnership with Gervinho. Surely it would make sense to reunite such a prolific pairing at the Emirates?
But instead, Arsenal fans will just have to spend the rest of the season praying that Van Persie doesn’t get injured and Wenger has to play either Park (whats that all about!) or Chamakh when he returns from the Nations Cup.
And Wenger says there is no quality players available at a good price in January……..
