Many people seem to think that Olivier Giroud will see a lot less playing time in an Arsenal shirt this season, especially if the Gunners sign another striker. With Theo Walcott close to his Arsenal comeback and Alexis Sanchez having signed from Barcelona, the theory is that the big Frenchman could be used more as a back-up option, but I think that Arsene Wenger still sees Giroud as central to his system.

Sanchez and Walcott may be able to play in that central striking role, and the young Frenchman Yaya Sanogo may see more action this season, but Giroud will be Wenger’s first choice to lead the line. His lack of pace will not really be the issue that many think, because the Frenchman will be surrounded by pace and skill on all sides.

His job is not to run in behind the defence, but to hold up the ball and bring his Arsenal team mates into the game. And Giroud does that to great effect. I can understand why some fans do not rate him, because his finishing needs to improve, but his link up play is fantastic. It is no coincidence that some of the best goals scored by the Gunners in the last two years have included Giroud in the build up play, like the one scored by Jack Wilshere against Norwich City.

And if he can improve again this season like he id in the last one, Giroud will be a huge asset and a key part in any success that we achieve.
