Arsenal had a very interesting summer and transfer window this time around and although it was filled with such frustration and anger for the most of it, come 11pm on Monday 2nd September and we were all jumping out of our seats with excitement. Arsenal of course secured the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a record breaking £42.5 million deal, whilst not forgetting we also managed to get Emiliano Viviano from Serie B side Palermo in Italy on a season loan worth just £875k.

This means overall we signed Ozil, Viviano (loan), Sanogo and Flamini. Perhaps not the greatest amount of incomers considering we only brought in four players compared to the massive twenty seven that left this summer. But over all were our deals successful and was the outcome of the window as positive as it could have been for Arsenal? I am unsure because despite the signing of Ozil, I cannot help but forget that we were also linked with the likes of Rooney, Higuain and Fabregas for most of the summer and we failed to bring in a single one.

Fabregas and Rooney of course remained with their current clubs, whilst Higuain joined Napoli and Fellaini, who was also mooted for a move to the Emirates, joined rivals Manchester United in the end. Sakho is another one who we let get away however for the £18m Liverpool paid for the Frenchman I’m glad Wenger didn’t take the deal any further, but staying on defensive targets I’m disappointed we never bid for Alderweireld.

In terms of midfield options we of course missed out on Gustavo which was a big disappointment. However, after Flamini’s performance against Spurs, it’s clear that we haven’t failed completely in our search for a good DM. We could have also had Cabaye, who at first I didn’t want but as times became more desperate, I recognised that perhaps he wouldn’t be too bad for the club. Now we have signed Ozil however, and if we had got Cabaye, Ozil may have never come because Wenger wouldn’t have been interested, so I’m going to stay relatively quiet on that one.

Overall I think we had a very successful summer shipping out several deadwood players at the club, whilst also bringing in some talented new faces. Wenger stuck with his youth policy with Sanogo, brought back another ex-gunner in Flamini, whilst also adding to the squad with an experienced player on loan. The other thing he did differently this year was he bought a world class player in Ozil and hopefully it proves to be a winning combination for the club. Was it enough?

  1. A complete waste of time to look back. Liverpool wouldn’t sell and Higuain wanted to go to sunny Italy. Therefore, look forward and support the team. No regrets especially now we have Özil, plus goalie plus DM. Lets go…
