It is being reported that Arsene Wenger really has taken to heart the way that Arsenal have struggled so far this season, especially in the area of defence. And the Frenchman has already admitted that he should have signed another defender in the summer and is planning to rectify that mistake in January.

According to a Metro report, Wenger is so serious about fixing the defensive issues, that he is determined to sign one of the best defenders in the world to do so, rather than just bring in another option to perhaps cover in case one of the current first choice pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

And with his top transfer target being the Germany and Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, it is not going to be cheap, which is why the Gunners are apparently preparing a massive offer of over £31 million for the talented 25-year old, who is currently carrying a minor injury and will miss the two Germany games with Gibraltar and Spain.

But if this, admittedly impressive, transfer is the only one Arsenal makes in January, will it be enough to rescue what is looking like a damp squib of a season?
