The Arsenal board and Arsene Wenger may not like it but in the real world that is top level football today, players cost a ridiculous amount of money. So if the Gunners are really serious about challenging the likes of Chelsea and Man City for the Premier League as well as having a proper crack at the Champions League, then we have to get serious with the spending.

That is why the news reported by the Daily Mail today that Wenger is planning a £50 million summer transfer swoop for three players does not exactly get me jumping up and down. Man United paid more than that for one player last summer.

Di Maria may be having a mare but in general the old saying of you get what you pay for tends to apply. Arsenal can afford more than that, so come on silent Stan, stop being so tight and miserly and give Wenger the sort of money that will really make waves.

I like the idea of signing Cech, Subotic and Schneiderlin but think Arsenal need to do more to close the gap. Am I right?
