If Arsene Wenger still harbours any hope of signing the Bayern Munich and Croatia star Mario Mandzukic for Arsenal this summer, he will have been pleased with the latest piece of transfer news from Germany. But if the Frenchman does not pull his finger out and stop swinging the lead, he may find out that the hotshot striker is no longer available after all.

There were reports in the German press last week that Mandzukic had got fed up of waiting for an official approach from the Gunners, even though we were said to be his favoured destination, with Premier League and Champions League football to offer and a much better chance of regular starts with the first team. It was being reported that the 28-year old had already agreed a deal to return to his former Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

That rumour has now been squashed by Wolfsburg themselves, as a report in The Express explains. But Arsenal cannot afford to wait much longer, because there are a number of top clubs around Europe, including our London rivals Chelsea, interested in the striker. Hardly surprising really, when you consider that he top scored for Bayern last season despoite not being the first choice of Pep Guardiola.

His finishing stats are remarkable and he has helped to fire the German champions to eight major titles in his two seasons at the Allianz Arena. So will Wenger act soon, or will he let another top striker slip away?
