It was always going to be a bit of a long shot for Arsenal to seal the transfer of the Juventus midfield star Arturo Vidal. The 27-year old Chilean is one of the most highly rated central midfielders in the world and there was little hope of the Italian champions selling him at all, never mind at a price which was within our reach.

But recent Arsenal transfer news had suggested that Juventus may be willing to sell Vidal if it meant that they could keep their young French midfield star Paul Pogba out of the clutches of Europe’s top and richest teams. Our main rivals for the Chile international’s signature seemed to be Manchester United, with our Premier League rivals supposedly having bid around £30 million.

That offered hope, because Arsenal could certainly match that and Vidal had previously claimed he would never move to a club that was not in the Champions League. Now though, according to a Metro report, United have offered him an incredible £230,000 a week to change his mind. With the wage structure at Arsenal as it is, and Mesut Ozil being our top earner on around £150,000 a week, there is no way that Wenger will match that offer, so it looks like the transfer dream of Vidal is over, but who will be our new midfield enforcer?
