After two previous attempts by Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager is hoping to make it third time lucky in his efforts to capture the young French midfielder Paul Pogba. Wenger has been alerted to the chance of signing the 20-year old after reports that he is unhappy at Juventus.

Pogba has impressed since moving to the Italian champions on a free transfer last summer from Manchester United. Ferguson was not happy about losing the talented player, although United were themselves accused of dirty dealing when they poached him from the French club Le Havre in 2009. Arsenal wanted him back then and it’s a real shame that United got him because he never got much of a chance and that is why he let his contract run out and joined Juventus.

He has played well in Italy and the Turin club do not want to sell him, but the widespread racist abuse that goes on in Serie A has made Pogba unsettled and think about leaving. The word from Italy, though, is that Juve see him as a long term replacement for Andrea Pirlo and are loath to see him leave.

It is not really a question of money, rather a case of whether Pogba can persuade the club to release him or whether the club can convince him to stick it out. Arsenal and Wenger will be waiting to pounce, but may well be disappointed. We must not wait too long, however, because we need a defensive midfielder desperately. Pogba is said to be a new Patrick Vieira, which would be ideal for us, but if we cannot get him we need somebody else.
