Whether or not the Arsenal fans would be happy with this transfer move or not is a matter of some debate, with many of us hoping that Arsene Wenger signs a proper defensive midfielder in the mould of Patrick Vieira or Gilberto Silva.

But if the Arsenal boss wants to bring in another all-round central midfielder more along the lines of Mikel Arteta, he could do a lot worse than the Borussia Dortmund and Germany international star Ilkay Gundogan. The 24-year old was born in the same German town as our own Mesut Ozil and is also of Turkish descent. And like Ozil, Gundogan is renowned for his great technical ability and vision, although his work rate and tackling are also key parts of his game.

And perhaps the biggest thing going for Gundogan and a possible transfer to Arsenal, according to a Daily Express report, is his availability. The paper claims that his Bundesliga club are ready to sell after Gundogan made it clear that we would not be signing an extension to his current contract.

And the player himself has let it be known that he would welcome a move to the Premier League, as long as it was to one of the clubs like Arsenal that are likely to be competing for a trophy or two and likely to be in the Champions League.

He said, “Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals.

“If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”

Would you like Wenger to make Gundogan a new Arsenal player this month?
