Maybe I should have said that Arsenal get the green and white light from this defensive target, because the player in question is Virgil van Dijk and his current club is the Scottish champions Celtic. But he might not be there for much longer after his recent words suggested that the 23-year old was keen on coming to play for Arsenal as soon as possible.

The Holland international centre back has only been playing for the Glasgow club since last summer but his outstanding performances have already drawn admiring interest from some bigger clubs around Europe, with Arsene Wenger also keeping track of him according to recent Arsenal transfer rumours.

Celtic’s Player of the Year from last season has stopped short of saying he wants to leave the club because that would not show much respect to his team mates and the fans, but you don’t have to be too sharp to read betwqeen the lines of his statement reported by Metro.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports, “Arsenal are an amazing club.

“It’s a big club with a great history. I’m happy here just now and I want to play well and we’ll see what happens in the future.

“Until there are bids I can’t say thing. There is no rush to leave but you never know in the future.”

So with his transfer fee said to be in the region of £15 million, should the Gunners go for this powerful and talented young defender in the January transfer window?
