Defensive injuries are beginning to pop up for Arsenal players and I am concerned that it may affect the start of the season. As I have said recently, Arsenal need to start and continue the season in a strong position. One of our biggest mistakes in recent years has been getting stuck behind the Manchester clubs within the first few weeks.

There has been a lot of optimism lately among Arsenal fans. The transfer window has brought happiness despite the only signing still being Yaya Sanogo. A £30 million bid for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez has helped though as it shows that Arsene Wenger is willing to change his frustrating ways and spend some goddamn money. We have also been chasing Gonzalo Higuain but that is far from a sure thing now. Still though, two world class strikers is a nice thing to think about during the window.

On the pre-season trip to Asia there have been several injuries and the latest one is Laurent Koscielny. Koscielny picked up the injury in Japan which leaves our defensive responsibility in the hands of Per Mertesacker and the youngsters.

Where is Thomas Vermaelen you say? Guess. He’s injured as he has been for a large chunk of his Arsenal career. This is and always has been a serious problem and one of the reasons Vermaelen isn’t considered one of the best defenders in the world. It has severely halted his progress, but enough of that. With Vermaelen and Koscielny out, as I said Mertesacker is now the only fit senior centre back.

Johan Djourou has been sent to the Bundesliga again, this time with Hamburg so we can’t just call him back already. Sebastian Squillaci has left the club because his contract has ended but I would rather have the under-18’s playing anyway.

The problems aren’t only in the centre though as Nacho Monreal has picked up an injury meaning Kieran Gibbs who is injury prone will have to hold down the position himself for the time being.

These injuries, if they continue into the new season could cause problems right off the bat. We need to avoid that and even though I haven’t been too bothered before, I now think it’s time to sign a new defender or two.
