Arsenal players should have no say in choosing the new coach

Should the players have a say on who coaches them?

I feel sad whenever I hear the word “player power”. I feel football has gotten to a stage whereby players are given so much power to either decide which coach to be hired or fired. A manager, who probably wants to last long as the coach of a club, must have a good relationship with his senior players or else he loses the dressing room. What a delicate situation we find ourselves in.

Arsenal is yet to officially announce Arteta as their new manager but the rumors are so strong and not a few believe it is only a matter of days, before he will be officially unveiled as coach of Arsenal. However, reports from the mirror.co.uk, indicates that all may not go smoothly for Arteta, if he eventually becomes the manager of Arsenal.

The mirror online says:

“Mikel Arteta has an open road to the Arsenal job after Carlo Ancelotti moved nearer a deal with Everton. But the former Gunners captain must overcome a furious reaction from his Manchester City bosses and an Arsenal dressing room where senior players wanted Ancelotti at the Emirates. City were left fuming and will demand a seven-figure release fee after Arsenal MD Vinai Venkatesham and contracts negotiator Huss Fahmy were pictured leaving the City No.2’s house in the early hours of yesterday following talks.”

Arsenal have made their former midfielder Arteta their first-choice to succeed Unai Emery and held talks with the 37-year-old at his Manchester home following City’s 3-0 win City were blindsided by Arsenal’s approach for Arteta and angry that they were not approached, despite their game at the Emirates. But even if he gets past that issue, Arteta could find established pros at Arsenal struggling to buy into his appointment because they were in favour of the vastly-experienced Italian taking over from Unai Emery.”

Now, the Mirror is not known for shouting wolf where there is none, and it is based on this that I feel sad. The players should be made to realize that the club pays them and that they are obliged to do their job on the football pitch and leave the administration of the club to those appointed to do so. Whoever the club chooses to hire, should not be a problem with the players. Not liking a coach before he even resumes, may not create a good working relationship between the coach and the players.

Arteta is somebody who is not afraid to shake things up when things are not working and if the players think they are getting a coach who will pamper them, then they need to think twice. Arteta is not really my choice but like I will always say, my choice does not matter as long as Arsenal moves forward. If Arteta is to come to Arsenal, then the players need to learn how to face their business and allow the club to run itself please.
