Arsenal set for another United battle as Vlaar ready for January transfer

Yesterday’s Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United was being billed by some as the battle between two beleagured and injury hit defences and which one of the makeshift back lines could cope the better.

As we know, Arsenal lost that battle thanks to some more sucidal defending and some bad luck combined with our poor finishing and De Gea’s keeping at the other. And United have a number of first choice defenders due to come back off the injury list soon, so you would have to say our need for reinforcements in January is greater.

We will have to see whether that makes a difference, however, as both clubs could be set for a transfer battle over the same player, Ron Vlaar. The Dutch international centre back’s current contract runs out next summer and although Villa boss Paul Lambert was hoping to sit down for talks over an extension, a Daily Star report makes that seem very unlikely.

The defender’s agent and Lambert are involved in a war of words over these proposed contract talks and they look very unlikely to happen. So Wenger needs to get his chequebook out and maybe pick up the phone because we cannot afford to lose to United again.
