Arsenal fans already knew that Arsene Wenger would have to break the club’s record transfer outlay in order to secure the signing of the manager’s top transfer target of the summer. And with all the hype around Kylian Mbappe together with the reports that the Monaco and France international star was wanted by the likes of Real Madrid the talk was that it would probably have to break the world transfer record set by Manchester United for the French midfielder Paul Pogba as well.

However, the actual asking price reported by the Daily Mail is a staggering £130 million and I just cannot see Wenger and the Arsenal board agreeing to cough that up. The lad might be a class act but for that sort of money we would want Lionel Messi in his prime, not just a promising 18-year old who may not even hit the ground running in the English Premier League.

The report does say that this price tag has forced Arsenal to rethink and focus on bringing some other quality but not quite so expensive new additions into north London. Perhaps now Wenger and the transfer team can push on and complete the signing of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon and still have plenty of cash to spare to strengthen other areas of the side.
