Some Arsenal fans have reacted with frustration and are exasperated by the throwaway comments made by Arsene Wenger yesterday about his search for a defender, as reported by Arsenal.com. But I would take the manager’s comments with a pinch of salt if I were you.

Wenger said, “We are still looking, yes.

“Unfortunately no [progress], but if you have a good idea, you can text me somewhere to the club!”

Don’t for a minute think that the Frenchman has not already got the names of his transfer targets and is just trying to get the right deal done. And one of those deals could be very close now, as the player involved Gabriel Paulista has revealed that discussions are ongoing between Arsenal and his current club Villareal of Spain’s La Liga, according to a Metro report.

The Brazilian centre back has been a major part of Villareal’s excellent back line that has helped them to remain unbeaten in all competitions since the first week in November. Those 15 games include an away win with a clean sheet against the current Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

Paulista said, “The subject is being discussed by my agent and the club.

“If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it’s not finalised then I am relaxed. I am focused on my work here.

“My agent is working on making sure I continue being calm.

“Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams. I have spoken to my agent about this.”

Sounds promising Arsenal fans…
