Whatever your thoughts are on how well Arsene Wenger has added to his Arsenal squad during the summer transfer window, and those opinions are widely different among Gooners and will continue to be a major source of argument and discussion as the season rolls on, I think we can all agree on one thing and that is the hope that it is enough to mount a serious title challenge this season.

Former Arsenal and England centre forward Alan Smith, however, thinks that we are all going to be disappointed in that respect again. The 51-year old scored over 100 goals for the Gunners in his time, including the first in that title winning victory at Highbury made famous by the film Fever pitch.

But it is not the attacking side of things that he is worried about, as he told Talksport that he thinks that Wenger has bought well with the additions of Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez. Like a lot of us Arsenal fans though, Smith seems a bit baffled as to why the Frenchman has yet again failed to sign a proper defensive midfielder to toughen up the spine of the Arsenal team.

He said, “Another trophy would be great this season, but I can’t see them winning the title, I really can’t.

“They’re still a few furlongs behind Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as they might have done in the summer transfer window.

“I think they have moved forward with the signings of Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck and [teenage defender] Calum Chambers, but I still think they are weak in terms of protecting the back-four.

“Realistically you’re looking at another top-four finish, and maybe they can nick a cup again, but unfortunately I still don’t see them as title challengers.”

There is still the January window, and there were a lot of rumours that we tried to sign players like Sami Khedira and William Carvalho this summer, but once again we have Arteta and Falmini, so do you think Smith is right?

  1. Arsenal is behind Chelsea and Man city not by design but because of the different financial regimes at the three clubs. Whereas Man city and Chelsea are two clubs owned by filthy rich benefactors, Arsenal has to make its money purely through business acumen. Therein lies the different lifestyles. Would I admire the Chelsea way. Unequivocally know because it compromises the club in the long run. Can Arsenal challenge for the title this season or it is impossible? The answer is yes Arsenal can indeed win it this season. The La Liga example where Atletico Madrid won against big spenders Barcelona and Real Madrid should give all of us hope. In the Premier League itself Liverpool very nearly pulled off the greatest upset of all time last season. What then makes it impossible for Arsenal to win it with all these quality players. Arsenal just needs to start defending as a team and attacking as a team and they will be able to beat all the big teams and win the EPL.
