It will be a well known fact now that we have made a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye but is he really the answer to all of our problems? I am not arguing with the bid as we are in desperate need for new players but can he add anything to the team that we don’t already have. I don’t think so.
Arsene Wenger could have a plan for him though. When Cabaye played for Lille in France before moving to the North East, he was used as a defensive midfielder – with playmaker abilities. Since he moved to Newcastle Alan Pardew gave him more of an attacking role and let players like Cheick Tiote be the anchor man. Cabaye does have good defensive ability, even Wenger was interested in him years ago so he has kept his eye on him.
What I am saying is, I think this player could be our manager’s choice to solve the defensive midfield problem. Not as physically monstrous as I would have liked but he has the ability as I said. If he isn’t to be used in this way though, why have we bid for him? At the moment I would have to say that we have enough attacking/playmaker type midfielders in the squad. Just off the top of my head we have Jack Wilshire, Tomas Rosicky, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and probably more that I’m forgetting.
Rosicky and Arteta are starting to get old but they can still do a job for us. I don’t even think Cabaye would be significantly better than any of these players. He has the same ability as most of them with the exception of Wilshere’s future ability.
Unless he really is to be our new anchor man, I think this was a panic bid. Also it would be interesting to see if we back off now that the bid was rejected. The search around Europe may continue yet again. What do you think?
