Arsene Wenger will no doubt be keeping a very close eye on a number of players over the next few weeks, as the January transfer window edges ever close and the Arsenal boss, hopefully, gets ready to splash some cash and strengthen the squad that is currently stretched very thin due to the mounting injury list.

One player that Wenger may watch more closely than others is the Sporting Lisbon and Portugal international star William Carvalho, as that defensive midfield role is surely the one most in need of help after the news that Francis Coquelin would be out for about three months.

Carvalho has a release clause or around £32 million according to a report in The Independent but he may be available for less for a couple of reasons. The first is that the player himself has made it pretty clear that he would love to sign for Arsenal.

Carvalho said, “I am where I want to be right now, which is Sporting but if I ever leave then it’s a sign that my work here is done. I dream of winning the Primeira Liga here. I prefer not to say too much but there is a club with which I’ve always been fond of: Arsenal.”

The other reason is the same one that will make Wenger watch him closely, because Carvalho suffered a tibia fracture in the summer and is only recently fit again. So he has only made two league appearances so far this season. If he plays regular football this month without any problems and returns to match fitness and finds his form, will Carvalho get his dream transfer to Arsenal?
