As we are now well into the last two weeks of the summer transfer window and still very little transfer activity from Arsenal incoming, the fans have become rather restless. But now it’s also got to the stage where the players at Arsenal are recognising the problems too and after several players including Wilshere, Walcott, Podolski and Jenkinson called out for a few signings in recent weeks, French international striker Olivier Giroud has joined them.

Giroud, who has been in fine form over the course of pre-season, scoring a magnificent eight goals, also looked lively in the opening game against Aston Villa and managed to get his name on the score sheet early on in the game. However even the 26 year old recognises Arsenal still needs to buy another striker, and so is openly stating that even though it would prove to be a challenge to him, it would be for the betterment of the team.

Giroud, who has been speaking to French media, Le Parisien, said, “In my opinion, it’s necessary for the club to recruit another striker. Obviously, I think about it a little bit. It may change the play one day, especially if it’s a high profile signing. It’s useless lamenting this though. I know what I have to do and what I’m capable of. I’m focusing on me and my work. The coach is counting on me, so I don’t think too much.”

Giroud is of course right in saying that he needs to continue to focus upon showing what he is capable of because it’s very possible we could go into September with him as our main striker. I don’t think people have too much of an issue with that thought because although we know we need a better striker, the main concern right now is our severe lack of numbers.

We must also remember Giroud never expected to be Arsenal’s main striker when he joined. He expected Van Persie to stay and for him to be 2nd choice, so he’s done very well and has certainly proved his ability this season after continuous doubts over his performances last season.

I wouldn’t be too disappointed to see Giroud line up as our main striker, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, however of course I know that we do need to sign a top quality striker, the question is who?
