It has become something of an annual routine, like the migration of birds or the herds of Wildebeest moving across Africa, that Arsenal get off to a bad start to the Premier League season. Then at Christmas, after the spuds have got all excited and started the other yearly tradition of spouting the usual `tide turning` rubbish before Arsenal find their form and go on a late run, pipping them to the Champions League again.

Forgetting about the interminable transfer saga for a minute, we had good reason for optimism this summer because we were keeping the team together and hoping that they could continue where they left off last season. That is still the case, but a couple of injuries could really spoil it.

Even if we get Suarez, he will not be available in the league for six games. Of course, we expect goals to come form Walcott, Podolski, Cazorla and others, as they did last year, but we need Giroud to lead the line. So the fact that Theo Walcott is impressed by what he has seen from Yaya Sanogo, mostly in training, is good news for Arsenal, just in case Giroud picks up a knock.

The other major concern, now that Szczesny is fit again, is the defence. We have seen in pre-season that Wenger has been planning for this by playing Bacary Sagna in the middle. The French international right back has assured Gooners that he is ready and happy to fill the breach if called upon.

“I see myself as a right back, but if I have to cover sometimes or play centre back, I will do it for the Club, my team and for myself as well,” said Sagna.

“I was not as sharp as I used to be(last season), so I’m very happy to start from the beginning and I’m looking forward to win something this season.”

Even if we sign a new defender, it will take time for them to get used to Arsenal, so Sagna’s ability to play in central defence could prove to be crucial in getting off to that good start we have all been hoping for and missing in recent years. Then maybe Sagna will have a chance to finally win something.

  1. Sanogo might be good in training but he did not look good against Galatasaray on the Emirates cup, he does not look very convincing and i doubt he will score 20 goals for us this season…in fact i don’t see him getting much playing time at all…in the other hand we have Sagna who will be great as a centre back as we have seen in the past, i trust the guy , he is very good. Go on Wenger buy a proven striker !! or at least get someone on loan !
