Arsenal were linked with an awful lot of players this summer and although it now seems to be a normality for Arsenal fans, we can no longer really define the rumours that can be classed as true and which ones are fake. It’s never easy being an Arsenal fan during the transfer window, however if the latest reports are deemed to be true then perhaps we were closer to signing another player than we may have thought.

Although Arsenal didn’t have the most productive summer this year, with just four players joining, when we were promised so much more by Wenger, the club did make up for the disappointment by making a massive statement of intent with the signing of Mesut Ozil in a club record breaking £42.4 million deal from Real Madrid. Arsenal also found solutions to their goalkeeping issues as well as bringing in a defensive midfielder in Mathieu Flamini, but we did fail to see any real movement in two areas of the pitch this summer.

The Gunners never signed a striker, which looks to be less significant than we thought now that we’ve witnessed Giroud score so many goals and show how important he is to the team. We also failed to bring in a defender, and although I’m not overly concerned about this, with the news that we were close to signing Juanfran from Athletico Madrid, I have been left a little frustrated. Juanfran, who is a Spanish international defender, has admitted that he could have joined Arsenal this summer, but instead chose to remain in Spain with Ateltico Madrid.

The right back told Marca.com, “It is true that I had an offer from Arsenal that any player would have liked to have accepted. But I am very happy here. For me, as everyone knows, there is no better club than Atletico.”

Like I said, although I’m frustrated we never saw a new defender come to the Emirates, especially now that I’ve learned we seemed close to signing Juanfran, I’m not overly disappointed because ultimately I can’t see how everyone would have fitted into the squad had he signed for us this summer.

Juanfran would have probably been Arsenal’s main right back, which would mean either Sagna drops to the bench, or becomes one of our first choice centre backs. If so where does that leave Vermaelen upon his return, and it would also kill of Jenkinson’s chances. Ultimately, although hearing that Juanfran could have signed for us this summer, it’s not something to be too disappointed about because we do in fact have good defensive options already in the squad. Does this mean that Wenger will be looking for a right back in January?
