We know that pre-season friendly games are more about preparation and fitness than anything, but at the same time it is never nice to lose a game, which is what happened to Arsenal last night in America.

The New York Red Bulls team featuring our former golden buy Thierry Henry do not have the same season as the Premier League, so we expected them to be more match sharp, but with Arsenal fielding the likes of Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky, you could still have hoped for more from us.

The only goal of the game came from a corner by Henry, and the Gunners’ defending was pretty poor. But with all three first choice centre backs still on holiday after the World Cup, perhaps that was not too surprising. Arsenal did control the ball for a lot of the game and created a few chances, but too few. Our lack of pace and strikers was very evident and could be seen as a reason to worry, with the Premier League opener in under three weeks.

But Arsenal still have a lot of pace and goal threat to come back, with Ozil, Podolski, Giroud, Walcott, Sanchez, Sanogo, Campbell and the Ox. So although it was a disappointing game from the Gunners, I think we should reserve judgment for another few weeks at least.

  1. Our LB was playing CB and seriously less than half the starting XI against NYRB would be actual starters. However, the game does show that outside of our best XI the squad depth is poor and uninspiring. If we get injuries this season again then we won’t win the league with our subpar bench.
