It seems, in the light of Olivier Giroud’s injury, that perhaps Arsenal should have been quicker to sign up a dedicated striker aerlier on in this transfer window.

One of those possible arrivals was Chelsea’s Demba Ba, who Jose Mourinho stopped from going to the Emirates last summer. Instead Besiktas snapped him up and he very nearly scuppered Arsenal’s place in this season’s Champions League proper.

He was asked if he had any regrets about not joining Arsenal. He replied: “I’m happy at Besiktas,”

“How close did I come to joining Arsenal? As close as you and me here, but it’s past. I just look forwards.

“Everybody knew that I wanted to come here [to Arsenal]. I could have maybe waited longer in this transfer window, but I wanted to go and play for Besiktas because it’s a great club.”

Asked if Chelsea would have let him join the Gunners this time around, Ba added: “Yes, because this time Jose [Mourinho] told me. Last summer he wanted to keep me, but he said this time if I had any opportunity he would let me go.”

So how many Arsenal fans would have preferred Demba Ba to be our main striker, whether Giroud was injured or not?
