I do not think the Arsenal fans will ever know exactly why Arsene Wenger did not complete at least one more defender transfer in the summer, but the Gunners have certainly been punished for it, with the injury problems of Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy forcing the manager to use a makeshift back four and suffer serious weakness at the back, never in more stark highlight than seeing a three goal lead slip against Anderlecht on Tuesday.

So it seems that the Prof has learned his lesson and is looking to sign not just one defender in January but two, according to Goal.com. The report suggests that the two players in question are the Celtic centre back Virgil van Dijk and West Ham’s Winston Reid.

It also claims that Arsenal did try to sign both of these players in the summer but that Wenger is now determined to succeed in the January transfer window. Both are young enough to be the future of Arsenal’s central defence for years to come, but does this spell trouble for the current centre back pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker?
